Original untouched condition.

DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful small painting was most likely painted by a New York artist in 1877, right before the fire bell tower that was located on this site was to be pulled down.  The structures are Jefferson Market, Jefferson Assembly Rooms and fire bell tower in West Greenwich Village on 6th Avenue.  The area was a market since around the 1830s.  Today, some of the original structures exist but the location that this painting depicts has been rebuilt over beginning in 1877.  Now it is the home of the New York Public Library branches.  We posted historic pictures of the bell tower from old photographs but the exact location and vantage can not be found.  It likely a single image of something that has no other record.  An incredible find for historic preservationists.
