Horace L. Shropshire, Jr. [1923-2010]

Horace L. Shropshire, Jr. [1923-2010] was an American landscape painter most associated with Connecticut.  He was born in Yonkers, NY, the son of Horace Shropshire [1888- ], a commercial artist, and Gertrude (Stark) Shropshire.  Shropshire studied at Syracuse University and trained in art at the Art Students’ League of New York.  He worked as a staff Industrial Engineer for Textron Lycoming and taught painting at the Milford Art League. Shropshire was the former president and instructor at the Milford Art League.  He was a freelance artist and an assistant art director for the packing department of Schenley Distillers.

Shropshire married Dorothy (Hawkins) Shropshire and had two sons, living on Cherry Street, 10 Green Street, and 36 Green Street in Milford, Connecticut, where he transformed a garage to serve as a studio and painted mostly plein air landscapes. Of his landscapes, he is most known for his “covered bridges” trying to save Connecticut history and was an avid Botanist.

The artist signed his work ‘HL.Shropshire’.

Shropshire died on December 13, 2010 in Madison, CT at age 87.
