Painter and stain glass designer, Frederic A Chapman was born in Connecticut in 1818. By August of 1850 he was in New York City and eventually settled in Brooklyn where he stayed until 1860.  Around 1850, he painted historical scenes of Boston and exhibited them.

He received recognition in the 1860s for a series of Civil War paintings.  Along with historical subjects, he also created landscapes and portraits and exhibited these at the American Art-Union.

Among his landscape subjects were Hudson River scenes including one historical painting of 1865 titled “Washington’s Headquarters at Newburgh, New York”. (New York Union Club). This subject, the Hasbrouck House, was a favorite among Hudson River School painters.

Chapman served as the first president of the Brooklyn Art Association from 1859-61. He died January 26, 1891.
