There are only two known paintings by the artist Wesley Vernier [1820-1881?]. The young student, ca.1860 was just the second known work from Vernier ever discovered. The first is a painting of a pear in the Los Angeles Museum of Art. Vernier was born in Ohio in 1820 and moved to California in ca.1860. The young student, ca.1860 was likely painted in California based on the light coming into the window. This would be one of the earliest California paintings known when a few painters settled ca.1878 on the West coast.
