CONDITION:
Age appropriate wear.  Slight restoration to left hand.  Scattered repaint.

DESCRIPTION:
Spanish Santos figure possibly of a wandering Jew, forced to walk the earth based several early stories of the bible.  Sometimes referred to with various names such as Cartaphilus (before being baptized), Ananias (after being baptized), Joseph Ahasver, as the exemplum of a fool, as Buttadeus, as Votadeo, as a symbol for emancipated slaves or Moses Gorden.  The story helps to illustrate the development of a pointed hat, which began during Greek times and slowly developed to a rounded pioneer-style Stetson hat depicted in this sculpture, which is believed to be the origin of the hat used by Orthodox Jews.
