BIOGRAPHY
Pierre Duval Le Camus (1790-1854) was a French genre and portrait painter.  He was born on February 13, 1790 in Lisieux, France, the son of a skilled glass installer (master glazier).  Le Camus was sent by his father to Paris to study business but sought out artistic training instead.
Le Camus’s early training was under Pierre-Claude Gautherot (1769-1825) (sometimes referred to as Claude Gautherot or Pierre Gautherot), a student of artist / educator Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825).  After a brief time, Le Camus decided to study directly under David in 1808.
In 1811, while painting the portrait commission of judge Eustache-Marie Courtin (1769-1839), he met and later married the judge’s niece.  The marriage opened doors in Paris high society for Le Camus.  The artist would split his time between important portrait commissions and genre works.  Le Camus’s portrait commissions included work for Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Sicile (1798-1870), the Duchess de Berry.
Le Camus exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1819 to 1853.
In 1837, Le Camus founded the Museum of Art and History of Lisieux and became a Knight of the Legion of Honor. He served as mayor of the town of Saint-Cloud from 1853 to 1854.
The artist’s son, Jules-Alexandre, became a painter and was commissioned to decorate the church of Saint-Cloud.
Le Camus died July 29, 1854 in Saint-Cloud, France.
