DESCRIPTION:
Most famous for teaching the artist Henri Matisse [1869-1954], Jules Alexandre Patrouillard DeGrave [1844-1932] was a popular genre artist of children.  DeGrave was a pupil of Jean-Leon Gérôme [1824-1904] and became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1883. He took part in the society’s exhibitions and gained an honourable mention in 1883. Degrave taught at the École de Dessin Quentin Delatour in St-Quentin.  All the children, ca.1875 is part of a series of very similar works exploring this theme and using the same children.
