DESCRIPTION:
Jean-Pierre “Jean-Paul” Haag [1842-1921] was a top French genre painter depicting idealized scenes of children and everyday country life .  Haag was a part of the Normandy Painters’ Colony (1870-1921) and Ecouen Painters Colony (1870).  He married Ernestine Juliette Confais, whom possibly is depicted in this painting knitting, and had several children.  Woman at window, ca.1880s is an unusual example of the artist employing a typical Renaissance, Medieval and trompe l’oeil device of an arched frame to heighten the depth.  Haag showed at various Salons in Paris and in colony exhibitions.

CONDITION:
Very good condition, craquelure throughout, appears to be relined ;
