Considered America’s foremost genre painter, William Sidney Mount [1807-1868] works usually express moralist or political views. He was one of the first painters in America to show African-Americans in his canvases. The artist began painting signs, worked as an engraver and finally settled into a full time painter in a studio on Long Island. Resting, ca.1846 depicts a man with hat smoking a pipe sitting next to a bird in a cage. This painting may be William Sidney Mount or his circle.
